Abstract

The concern with the generation of agricultural residues has increased over the years due to thepopulation growth, mainly with the prediction that the human population will reach 9.5 billion by 2050. The United Nations recognizes the need to intensify research into technologies that convert industrial waste into useful sources for society. It is estimated that about 30% of the mass of waste generated around the world comes from forestry and agricultural activities. This numbershould be even higher in Brazil due to intense agricultural activities. Among the main agriculture in Brazil, and therefore one of the main sources of waste generation, is the orange. The orange has natural compounds of great pharmaceutical and food interest, such as essential oils and antioxidant substances such as flavonoids. The search for these compounds of interest in residues through advanced value-added strategies based on green technologies, beforeadding them to low value-added products is seen as a way of conserving resources environmental issues and to diversify the generation of products from the same raw material. Those efforts should be driven by research based on sustainability principles from the start. The objective of this project is to develop sustainable analytical approaches and methodologies in chemical investigation of agro-industrial residues generated in the production of orange juice in Brazil. The experimental procedures will consist of extraction of low polarity compounds presentin the orange agricultural residues, using hydrophobic Natural Eutectic Solvents, calledhNADES, and GC-MS analyses, with the potential to obtain a significant value from the residues ofbiomass.
