Abstract

Substances non-intentionally added (NIAS) have been detected in foods that have been in contact with packaging materials, arising from reactions and degradations that occur during packaging processing, degradation of additives, impurities, neoformed compounds and contaminants. When it comes to material irradiated by gamma irradiation, there is still a gap to be filled with scientific studies regarding NIAS analysis. Therefore, the objective of this research is to identify NIAS in packaging materials for contact with food (irradiated and non-irradiated) and to investigate the influence of radiation on the formation of NIAS, in an attempt to elucidate the migration potential of these substances and the level of population exposure to such compounds. Therefore, the present project proposes a Research Schollarship Abroad (BPE) as an interesting learning in the determination of NIAS in food contact packaging, and thus contributing to the training of the Cetea/Ital team. The activities will be developed together with Dr. María Consolación Cristina Nerín da la Puerta, from Universidad Zaragoza in Spain. (AU)
