Abstract

This research project aims to create a compositional model capable of systematizing the notions of flux and energy as elements of continuity in musical discourse. It stems from the work of composers such as Iannis Xenakis, Gérard Grisey, Helmut Lachenmann and Brian Ferneyhough, even if owing its core conceptual foundation to poetic images extracted from the philosophical work of Gilbert Simondon, who in several of his texts deals with questions of flux and energy, offering insights into how to systematize these notions in terms of what he conceived as an "allagmatic process". The project involves both a technical-conceptual dimension and practical one, and intends to collaborate with relevant Portuguese instrumentalists in the contemporary music scene so as to transport conceptual systematization to the realm of musical invention. The research project is expected to be developed in partnership with GIMC-CESEM. It further explores the results obtained from the main project "Time and Continuity: The Spring-Mass System as a Metaphor for Musical Invention", currently in execution with a Productivity Grant from the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPQ).
