Abstract

Forensic Dentistry plays an important administrative and expert role in providing assistance to Justice. Among the areas of competence of the specialty, there is the human identification and the construction of the biological profile through the analysis of bone remains. Sex estimation comprises an important step in the construction of the biological profile, which aims at human identification, and can be performed by analyzing the bones of the pelvis or skull. The aim of this study is to verify whether linear, angular, and area measurements used in lateral cephalometric radiographs can be applied to sex estimation in the Brazilian population based on the development of a statistical logistic regression model. Linear, angular, and area measurements will be performed in 320 lateral cephalograms (160 males and 160 females) based on the analysis of eight cephalometric points (glabella, orbital, saddle, base, porium, nasion, anterior nasal spine, and posterior nasal spine) visualized in each lateral teleradiograph. Lateral cephalograms obtained for therapeutic reasons from participants aged between 20 and 40 years, who have expressed consent through an Informed Consent Form prior to the examination, will be included. The sample will come from the collection of a private dental clinic in the city of Brasília, Federal District, with confidentiality of the identity of the participants. The anatomical design and the cephalometric tracing of the reference points will be carried out using the free software ImageJ (https://imagej.nih.gov/ij/index.html). The values obtained will be organized in Excel® software spreadsheets (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, USA) for further statistical analysis.(AU)
