Abstract

This project proposes a 12-month research internship at the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas (SRU), a research centre based in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia (United Kingdom). During this period, under the supervision of Dr Aristoteles Barcelos Neto, I will develop activities related to my doctoral research on the visual culture of the Guarani-Kaiowá people, concentrating on an in-depth analysis of ethnographic materials collected during fieldwork. Also during this period, I will work on the advancement of archival research, literature review, and on continuing the development of visual experimentations. As this research engages directly with anthropological debates regarding non-Western arts, working abroad with Dr Barcelos Neto - a specialist in Amerindian material and visual culture and author of major works in this field - and participating in SRU's intellectual environment, activities and lectures, as well as benefiting from access to its specialist library and art collections, will be an invaluable contribution to the research's advancement and to the writing of my doctoral thesis. Furthermore, this research internship will allow me to establish an international research network gathering scholars and researchers from SRU and other key UK institutions who are references in the fields of Visual Anthropology, Material and Visual Culture, Photographic and Film Archives, and Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.
