Abstract

This proposal for a research internship abroad is associated with the currently Master's project number 2021/03773-7 entitled "Earthquake-resistant design evaluation applying fragility curves". The associated research project is intended to evaluate and compare earthquake-resistant design based on force and capacity methods with the seismic fragility performance methodology. The current Brazilian seismic standard is NBR 15421 (2006), which uses the Force Based Design, which considers an elastic response of the structure with constant mechanical characteristics to the seismic action and adopts the elastoplastic behavior of the material from the application of seismic design factors. Although international codes enforce a similar process of design methodology, unlike the Brazilian standard, these regulations complement the design through capacity method tools, characterizing the inelastic processes of the structure and determining the ductility gain due to the energy dissipation capacity. Besides, the main international seismic standards have been intensifying their dimensioning measures and including performance methods, such as the European standard Eurocode 8 - "Design of structures for earthquake resistance", which go through a revision process on this proposal's date submission. Hence, this project aims to identify and apply earthquake-resistant design tools based on Eurocode 2 and Eurocode 8 that are not included in the Brazilian standard and could be inserted in the context of performance gain and ductility of the structure. Thus, this study will improve the assessment of earthquake-resistant design of the main research project, conducting a similar analyze as carried out by other international researches in partnership with the responsible supervisor.
