Abstract

This research project proposes to investigate how the concept of parity of participation isformulated and developed in Nancy Fraser's intellectual path in order to constitute thenormative principle of his two-dimensional theory of social justice. For that, we propose aresumption of the author's writings from the 1980s in order to understand how theparity of participation, elaborated in his theory of justice, seems to find its basisgerminal especially in the context of formulating the policy of interpretation ofneeds. The texts that comprise our thematic axis are gatheredmainly in the collection Unruly Practices (1989) and in the book Redistribution orrecognition? (2003). In Unruly Practices, the author proposed - more than looking at thesatisfaction of necessity claims - thinking about how the struggle itselfpolitical movement around needs, held on the discursive plane, is crossed byinequalities that constitute the formulations and interpretations of certain social groupsas legitimate and hegemonic, while others are constructed as subaltern andcounter-hegemonic. Next, our aim is to investigate the way in which the concept ofparity of participation, informed by the writings of the 1980s, is established in the bookRedistribution or Recognition?, fulfilling the role of integrating redistribution andrecognition in a single normative core for the elaboration of the theory of justice. Likewe will try to show, the guiding thread that runs through the research is precisely the question ofimpediments placed on equal participation in social life.
