Abstract

Fluidized beds consist basically of a suspension of solid particles (grains) by an ascending fluid in a vertical tube. Devices using fluidized beds are commonly employed for the gasification of coal, given their high rates of mass and heat transfers. Uniform fluidized beds are rarely encountered in industrial applications and instabilities, such as transverse waves, bubbles, and long bubbles, usually appear. This Undergraduate Project (Iniciação Científica) will investigate experimentally the instabilities and structures appearing in a gas-solid fluidized bed. For that, different beds will be fluidized by airflow in a transparent tube, and their evolution will be recorded by a high-speed camera. Numerical scripts will be written to follow individual grains as well as larger bed structures and to compute characteristic lengths and velocities. (AU)
