Abstract

The grand goal behind this thesis consists in going a step forward concerning Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetimes (QFTCS). QFTCS is an approach devised to unveil quantum-field-theoretical effects in classical spacetimes. This is quite reliable provided we stay below the Planck scale. Yet, the backreaction of the quantum fields on the spacetime itself is much more difficult to assess. We aim to look for low-energy insights for quantizing gravity, the physical meaning behind it, and reliable schemes to compute the backreaction of quantum fields with large dispersion on the spacetime. Ultimately, we would like to be able to propose at least general directions on how the classical-spacetime concept should be modified to comply with quantum-mechanical principles. We can think of our proposal as being for pre-quantum-mechanics (1900-1927) as quantum gravity would be for quantum mechanics (1927-...). (AU)
