Abstract

Apical Periodontitis (AP) is the result of bacterial infection of the root canal. The inflammatory response of the host, in an attempt to suppress the microorganisms, intensifies the process, generating a loss of bone support, tooth resorption, and pain. The practice of physical activity sensitizes the immune system, leaving the body less vulnerable to inflammation and infections. In addition, physical exercise was able to reduce the intensity of inflammation caused by PA. Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate the effects of swimming exercise on apical periodontitis, developed in rats, analyzing the presence of bacteria inside the root canal and periapical region and the repair capacity of collagen fibers in the dental periapical. Twenty male Wistar rats will be divided into 2 groups of 10 rats each: C+PA group and T+PA group. The protocol will occur in two stages: adaptation to the aquatic environment and training. Apical periodontitis will be induced on the 28th day and the rats will be sacrificed on the 58th day by anesthetic overdose. The upper molars will be collected and processed for histological analysis with Picrosirius Red (PSR) and Brown-Brenn (B&B). The collected data will be tabulated and statistically analyzed using the SigmaPlot 12.0 program (Systat Software Inc., San Jose, USA) at a significance level of 5%.(AU)
