Abstract

Sarcopenia has as its most current definition a disease of the muscular system and connective tissue, muscular disorders and other muscular disorders, commonly being diagnosed in adults with advanced age, but it can be found in younger individuals. Objectives: To inventory and develop analytical approaches for the identification of risk of muscle health (sarcopenia) and bone health (ostepenia) from assessments conducted with DXA and with inamometers/muscle strength platforms and analyze cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between indices of sarcopenia (muscular and performance) and osteopenia indices (material and structural/geometric) of the pelvis and regions of interest of the proximal femur. Methods: This project is part of a study being carried out at the Department of Sport and Health, CIPER, Faculty of Human Motricity, Universidade Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal. The longitudinal research (theoretically) counts about 300 young adults currently 22/23 years of age who were evaluated in 2011/12 for their muscle and bone health. Pediatric sarcopenia will be assessed using body composition measurements, namely related muscle mass measurements (assessed by DXA dual X-ray absorptiometry, QDR Explorer model, Hologic, Waltham, MA, USA) and musculoskeletal fitness measures assessed. by dynamometry (dynamometer (Jamar, Lafayette, IN, USA) and the bone geometry of the pelvis and femur will be evaluated by DXA dual X-ray absorptiometry and left hip will be performed to derive geometric measurements of the pelvis by the device (QDR Explorer, Hologic , Waltham, MA, USA).
