Abstract

With globalization, the Food Supply Chains become more extensive and complex and, as a consequence, more susceptible to risks and ruptures. These events impact the final consumers of food products, either by causing illness or even death, due to the consumption of contaminated food products. On the other hand, risks and ruptures might cause financial losses to the organizations, loss of trust from consumers, and damage to the image and reputation of the company. Also, it can result in losses originating from by-products that are inappropriate for selling and end as residue. Considering this context, it becomes essential to mitigate such effects, and an efficient traceability system is pointed out by researchers as a response. However, traceability can only be achieved if there is interoperability between the information systems used for management and the growing amount of information generated and collected. In order to contribute to solving this problem, emerging technologies and integrated I4.0 make it possible to create a self-controlled system and an intelligent environment, capable of making traceability more effective and robust. However, some gaps were observed in the literature regarding the contribution of emerging technologies and I4.0 in traceability. The objective of this research is to identify which and how emerging technologies and I4.0 are used in the traceability of food supply chains, and what their roles are. Therefore, it will be conducted a systematic literature review, followed by a content analysis of the selected articles, with the help of QDA Miner. At the end of the project, it is intended to elaborate a framework about the role of emerging technologies and I4.0 in food supply chains' traceability, and define a future research agenda on this topic.(AU)
