Abstract

This study aims to evaluate different levels of the replacement of corn silage by triticale silage using an artificial rumen (Rusitec). The experiment will run as a completely randomized design with a factorial treatment structure (proportion triticale silage: corn silage; 0:100, 33:67, 67:33, and 100:0) replicated in two Rusitec apparatuses (n = 8 fermenters). Fermenter will be considered the experimental unit and day of sampling as a repeated measure. The duration of the experiment will be four periods of 16 d with 8 d of adaptation and 8d of sampling. True dryer matter disappearance at 48 h will be determined from days 13 to 15 of each period, and daily ammonia (NH3) and volatile fatty acid (VFA) production will be measured. Data will be analyzed as repeated measures over time using the PROC MIXED package from the SAS. Values of Pd0.05 will be considered significant for all evaluated parameters. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts will be performed to determine if replacing corn silage with increasing concentrations (0, 33, 67, and 100%) of triticale silage will result in a linear or quadratic effect on measured parameters. Significance will be declared at P d 0.05, and trend will be discussed when 0.05 < P < 0.10. (AU)
