Abstract

The Paramirim aulacogen is understood as an intracontinental rift system, nucleated around 1.75 Ga, in the central region of the São Francisco craton (SFC), which allowed the deposition of thick sedimentary sequences, predominantly siliciclastic and carbonate, such as the Espinhaço and São Francisco supergroups. The complex tectonic evolution of the CSF ultimately involved an intense process of collisions and docking during the Brasiliano cycle around 640-500 Ma, which culminated in the tectonic inversion of the Paramirim aulacogen. In this context, important shear zones and intracratonic thrust and fold belts were developed. Despite the intense study regarding the tectonic evolution of the area, little is known in quantitative terms about the geometry, kinematics, magnitude and mechanisms of the deformation involved in the aforementioned geological event. During the last few years, little attention has been paid to the kinematic and geometric constraints that the Paramirim aulacogen imposes on the evolution of the SFC and its marginal Araçuaí-West Congo orogen (AWCO). Therefore, this project aims at the geological-kinematic modelling of the Paramirim aulacogen in order to contribute and enrich the models currently proposed for the evolution of the São Francisco craton and, consequently, of the AWCO.The present master's proposal will continue the studies developed by the candidate within the scope of two undergraduate scientific initiations, one of which is a FAPESP project (IC Proc. 2020/03337-0), and a research internship abroad linked to the FAPESP project Análise tectônica de áreas-chave do front de empurrões do Espinhaço Meridional (Proc. 2019/25599-9). The main objective is to investigate the kinematic and deformation conditions imposed on the Paramirim Aulacogen during the Brasiliano cycle in the context of the São Francisco Craton and its marginal orogens. For this, balancing and restoring geological cross sections, finite strain analysis and construction of kinematic forward models will be carried out along sections cutting the Paramirim aulacogen, from its western region, Northern Espinhaço range, to the Chapada Diamantina, to the east. The results will be integrated to others to compose a discussion about the role played by the aulacogen during the tectonic evolution of the São Francisco craton in the Brasiliano orogenic cycle.
