Abstract The research project aims to carry out a study of Natalia Ginzburg's epistolary novels, Caro Michele, 1973, and La città e la casa, 1984, in which surfaces a radical transformation in Italian society over the 1970s and 80s, by establishing a connection with the author's thought, which emerges from the numerous essays published in magazines and newspapers that never been gathered in a collection. By mapping the dispersed nonfiction production at editorial and private archives, it will be possible, on the one hand, to broaden the understanding of Ginzburg's thought; on the other hand, to include both novels in a deeper meditation on the sociopolitical context. Still, to weigh the differences between narrating reality and recreating it, in particular with regard to the transformation of family life and social roles, and the role of art in conserving memory and representing reality.
