Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of dietary lutein supplementation on the evolution of induced experimental periodontitis (EP), on the biomechanics and histomorphology of the tibia of Wistar rats. Ninety male rats (Rattus novergicus albinus, Wistar), will be randomly distributed into 3 experimental groups. the experimental groups will have the induction of PE by the installation of a cotton bandage on the first All experimental groups will have PE induced by installing a cotton band in the left and right lower first molars. The groups are PE-CN: no procedure or procedure or substance will be employed, and monitoring is performed throughout the experimental period; PE-SHAM: daily administration of 0.7 ml/kg of SS via gastric gavage (GG). PE-LT: GG with 250mg/kg of LT, throughout the experimental period. Euthanasia will be performed at 7, 15, and 30 days after the induction of PE (PE-CN, PE-SHAM, and PE-LT). The hard tissue specimens will be removed and subjected to fixation and washing steps for further processing The hard tissue specimens will be removed and submitted to the fixation and washing step for further processing or not the demineralization step, according to the analysis to be performed: computerized microtomography of the mandibular bone volume fraction; spectroscopy of X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy to verify mandibular bone mass; biomechanical testing of the mandible and tibia to assess the bone structure and histomorphometric analysis to assess tibial bone loss.
