Abstract

This research situates in the scope of the FAPESP/ANR thematic project: Co-Polis: Social co-production of the city and citizen science. A comparative perspective on the working class and precarious neighborhoods in France and Brazil. Focused on reflection on participatory urban planning methods, the result of collaboration between different actors such as organized civil society, universities, professionals. We seek to understand the methodological dynamics of the co-production of urban space from the systematization of case studies, linked to research projects and extension of laboratories linked to universities, bringing new knowledge that is disseminated in the field. In an expanded form, the project comprises the critical evaluation of these practices and the tensions and impasses arising from them, in specific case studies, in Brazil and France, understanding their impacts on civil society and the third sector and the production of urban planning. The vision of the limits and potential of participatory planning practices allows the formulation of a reflection on the citizen-extension, its capacity of action and production of knowledge based on the articulation of different actors in the spaces of collective action created by them.
