Abstract

The use of ionizing radiation in modern society takes many forms, from health with diagnostic tests and treatments to the industry through food irradiation. Natural and synthetic dosimetric materials are used to determine the radiation dose received, with applications in medical and industrial activities. Natural materials have applications, for example, in retrospective dosimetry and can be a lower-cost alternative to synthetics. Within this context, the investigation of potential dosimetric natural materials becomes a topic of social interest. This work seeks to evaluate the effects of ionizing radiation on olivines from the south of Minas Gerais, using thermoluminescence (TL) and radioluminescence (RL) techniques. Furthermore, measurements of optical absorption (AO) in the UV-VIS spectrum for the study of absorbing centers, and the use of scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) for the characterization of characteristic elements of olivine as well as also identify the phases of associated minerals.
