Abstract

Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the destruction of the supporting tissues of the tooth. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) corresponds to one of the main risk factors for periodontitis, and its relationship with periodontal disease appears to be bidirectional since periodontal treatment can contribute to glycemic control. Thus, early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease in this population is essential for maintaining oral and general health. Therefore, we hypothesized that type 2 DM patients have a higher severity of periodontal disease when compared to non-diabetic individuals. This study will aim to evaluate the periodontal condition and the response to periodontal treatment in type 2 diabetic patients when compared with systemically healthy individuals at 3 months post-treatment.(AU)
