Characterization of people living with HIV/AIDS aged 50 years or more treated at a reference service in the interior of the state of São Paulo

Abstract

The combination of multiple classes of potent and effective drugs in antiretroviral therapy (ART) dramatically reduced the morbidity and mortality associated with HIV infection. The increase in life expectancy was responsible for ensuring the aging process of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). At this moment, new challenges and new demands arise, since for these patients, aging occurs earlier and is more accentuated, being associated with a higher rate of comorbidities not associated with HIV. Much of the scientific literature that discusses this process comes from the experiences of developed countries. The main objective of this project is to characterize individuals aged 50 or over, infected with HIV or with AIDS, being monitored at the Specialized Infectology Outpatient Service "Domingos Alves Meira" (SAE-DAM), a reference in the interior of the state of São Paulo. This is an exploratory retrospective cohort study, in which PLWHA aged 50 years or more who are being followed up at the SAE-DAM between 1985 and 2021 will be evaluated. These patients will be evaluated in relation to clinical and epidemiological characteristics, immunological and virological. With the characterization of these patients, it is expected to identify the specific needs and particularities of this group. Such information will help to establish new strategies and approaches in order to ensure better care and a better quality of life for this population.(AU)
