The occupations for housing purposes, especially those on underutilized buildings in the São Paulo city center, by organized social movements or not, consist of a strategy of struggle and resistance to ensure the right of the city and housing. Since the first occupations in the 1990s, under a context of demographic deflation and reduced real estate interest, it was developed a significant collaboration between social movements, technical advisement and university to ensure the right to housing policies and the dignity to those inhabitants, in face of oppressions from State agents and property owners. After almost three decades, the relations between university and inhabitants remained close; however, the context has changed deeply. New real estate releases in this area and a growing high-income population, the usual criminalization of social movements by State agents and press, and also organized crime pressures, they all tense those occupations in their resistance strategies. This research aims to analyze the action of the university combined with occupations in the São Paulo city, articulating the different study fields of the CoPolis project, with special focus on vertical occupations in the city center, seeking to understand this action in the construction of means of resistance in support of social movements claiming for housing.
