Analysis of tool-workpiece contact zone during the application of cutting inserts with adpated geometry and different finishes in orthogonal cutting of a titanium alloy

Abstract

In the main project, the application of cutting inserts with adapted geometry was proposed in an attempt to avoid the first (accelerated) stage of the wear curve and, thus, to increase their life during turning of the Ti-15Mo alloy. In order to better understand the involved phenomena, this project is focused on analyzing the tool-workpiece contact and determining the friction coefficient in this region, with basis on orthogonal cutting tests and force measurement. For this, inserts with different geometries and surface finishes will be prepared by grinding at the Federal University of São Carlos and their application and analysis will be carried out in dedicated equipment, built and located at the University of Lisbon. The obtained results should allow a better understanding of the material removal mechanisms by inserts with adapted geometry and its influence on the friction between tool and workpiece. (AU)
