Abstract

The present work seeks to comparatively analyze three Spanish-American plays from the beginning of the 19th century: Camila, o la patriota de Sudamérica de Camilo Henríquez (1817), Tupac Amaru by Luís Ambrósio Morante (1821) and La Pola by José Domínguez Roche (1826). Aiming to comprehend the relations between theater and politics during the Spanish American wars of independence, I start with a study of the aesthetic and ideological relations that the plays establish with programmatic and dramatic texts of the Age of Enlightenment, its circulation being amplified in the second half of the 18th century at the core of the theatrical reforms in Spain. From the analysis of plays and text of that period, I seek to reconstitute the cultural effervescence around the patriotic theater in search of foreign models - above all the so called "comedia lacrimosa" - in order to forge discourses about identities which legitimize the emergent National States.
