Abstract

This research project seeks, through a biomimetic and interdisciplinary approach, to study the structural potential of bioinspired composites given the design and manufacture of advanced materials, with a focus on evaluating the feasibility of their biomedical application for the optimization of prostheses. The objective is, therefore, to collaborate in meeting the growing demand for lighter prostheses that still present good strength. Hence, it is intended to investigate which are the most distinct characteristics of the bone responsible for promoting its outstanding mechanical performance, as well as identify ways to translate them into the design of bioinspired composites aiming at structural optimization of materials. The 3D CAD geometric modeling step of the composite will be performed with the aid of Autodesk Fusion 360 and Autodesk Netfabb software, with subsequent improvement of the geometry and simulation of the mechanical performance of the model in Abaqus software employing the finite element method. So, observing the need for lightweight materials with good structural performance for implementation in prostheses and understanding the existence of gaps in the field of materials science regarding the investigation of the impact of microscopic structure on the macroscopic behavior of trabecular bone as a natural composite, this project aims to promote bioinspired innovation.
