Abstract

Based on the growing food and energy demand and the high environmental changes resulting from the conversion of natural environments into agricultural areas, are fundamental the development of research that seeks to understand how anthropogenic changes, through the change in land use and land cover, affect the hydrological processes. Understanding the infiltration and runoff processes is an important step towards the development of strategies to guarantee the sustainability of ecosystems, restoration and preservation of natural vegetation. Thus, this work has as its main objective the preliminary study about how the anthropic action, through agricultural crops, interferes on infiltration and surface runoff. The present study will be developed in experimental plots under different land uses found in the Southeast region of Brazil: sugarcane, Cerrado stricto sensu, soybean and exposed soil. To reach the goal, the study area, already in operation, will be continuously monitored through the collection of meteorological (precipitation, air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed and atmospheric pressure) and hydrological data (runoff and soil moisture). In 2021, the research area was expanded after identifying that the precipitation events occurring in the experimental plots under operation since 2011 has lost its pedological superficial conditions. Thus, a new triplicate of experimental plots kept in bare soil was constructed. To monitor runoff in this research area, large tipping buckets are used, which have the same working function as rain gauges. From the field data, it was possible to obtain flow curves that represent the hydrological processes in a consistent way. The use of large tipping buckets will allow not only the quantification of surface runoff, but also the creation of a runoff curve over time for the different land cover. Finally, for monitoring soil moisture, different low-cost technologies are being tested in the field. Preliminary results suggest that capacitive sensors SKU: SEN0193 are promising for monitoring soil moisture, being a satisfactory low-cost alternative for monitoring oscillations due to precipitation events and also determining the arrival time of the wetting front. The information collected will serve as input, calibration and validation data for the Hydrus model. Once calibrated and validated according to local particularities, the model will become a useful tool to describe the hydrological behavior under current land uses and occupations in areas of the Cerrado biome. This will allow for a better understanding of hydrological responses to current events and the analysis of future scenarios under changing climate conditions. (AU)
