In the field of secondary grinding or regrinding, the concern about energy efficiency is of great importance. As a general rule, the specific consumption in this stage is higher than that in the primary grinding stage. Moreover, it has been noticed a trend toward finer grinding size in new metal ore processing projects, leading to an increasing expenditure at this stage, both in terms of capital and operating costs. In Brazil, new projects that include a regrinding stage have required regrinding product size around 40 to 20 µm. The estimation of energy and particle size distribution of the products of such fine grinding is not trivial and has not yet established methodology. This project aims to develop an ore physical characterization methodology for modeling - empirical and phenomenological - of vertical stirred mills applied to regrinding, with a view to its sizing and optimization, when there is limited mass availability. For this purpose, a Hardgrove mill equipped with a torque measuring system will be used. To validate the model will be used at least four ore samples from different regrinding circuits in Brazil.
