Abstract

This Research Project, to be carried out during a one-year sabbatical leave in the group of Prof. Vitor Cardoso at the Center for Astrophysics and Gravitation (CENTRA) of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon, proposes a systematic study of several physical and mathematical aspects of the new area called Black Hole Spectroscopy. Briefly, it consists in the simultaneous observation of several (quasinormal) modes of oscillation of the final phase of a black hole formation, which would allow the reconstruction of part of the gravitational wave emission spectrum and would reveal important data about the underlying physical processes. In addition to the enormous observational challenges of this proposal, there are also some interesting theoretical points that deserve to be, and currently are, investigated.
