Abstract

We aim at exploring the properties of trapped Rydberg ions to study its potential for quantum information processing tasks. More specifically in this project we will focus on realistic schemes for quantum operations and their experimental realizations in a system of Strontium ($^{88}$Sr$^{+}$) ions. To this end, one needs to take into account the properties of $^{88}$Sr$^{+}$ ions when excited to electronic Rydberg states. By coherently manipulating Rydberg transition of such ions, we are interested in describing the effective two-qubit interactions in the system. As a first theoretical limitation to be bypassed, we will study strategies to enhance the two-qubit gate fidelity (currently of order of $80\%$), in which fidelities of order of $99\%$ are highly desirable. The methods developed will be experimentally verified in order to validate the method before applying it for multi-qubit gates. A system with more than 10 atomic ions is available as the current state-of-art of the trapped Rydberg ion experiment. The results of this project meets potential applications in different branches of quantum information science, from the development of new quantum devices to the processing and storing of quantum information.
