By colliding the nuclei of heavy atoms that have been accelerated to incredible energy, we are able to create exotic states of matter and probe fundamental properties of the universe. In particular, it is believed that extremely high temperatures can be achieved in these relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Under these conditions, the physics is governed by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of the strong nuclear interactions. According to QCD, at such high temperature there should exist a new phase of matter called the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP).Results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have confirmed the creation of a strongly interacting, almost-perfect fluid QGP, with quantitative determination of its properties ongoing. However, the dynamics of the earliest stages of the collision is still uncertain. In this project, I propose to to use experimental data to constrain properties of the first stages of a heavy-ion collision. This serves two purposes --- to better understand the strong interactions in a many-body, out-of-equilibrium regime, and then to use this knowledge to make more precise determinations of the properties the quark-gluon plasma that is subsequently created in each collision. Specifically, I propose to investigate the relation between the initial state of the collision and the final transverse momentum of the surviving particles at the end of a collision, and use these relations in combination with experimental data to place constraints on the early-time behavior of the system.
