Graphic identification of printing offices in the city of São Paulo: 1900-1930

Abstract

This research internship abroad project (BEPE-DR), already foreseen in the doctoral research project entitled "The Graphic Identification of Letterpress Printing Shops in São Paulo: 1900-1930" (FAPESP grant 2018/03383-1), aims to identify and describe the main Italian influences that guided São Paulo printers in the design of the graphic identification for their letterpress printing shops during the first three decades of the 20th century. This is a qualitative research proposal, based on documentary research procedures by which it is intended to: describe relevant ancient Italian graphic artifacts; identify relevant Italian typefaces; describe and compare the graphic identification strategies adopted by early 20th century Italian and Brazilian letterpress printing shops. The analysis of the results will be carried out from the creation and analysis of concept maps through which the repetitions of graphic characteristics adopted by both Italian and São Paulo letterpress printing shops will be observed. This proposal is related to a double PhD degree program between the University of São Paulo School of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU USP, Brazil) and the IUAV University of Venice (IUAV, Italy), in which the PhD candidate is already enrolled, and that has, as requisite, a 6 month stay in the partner University.
