Abstract

The aim of this project is to understand the systematic function performed by intersubjectivity in the explanation of consciousness and knowledge, as it was thought by Fichte mainly in "Fichte's second Jena Wissenschaftslehre" (1796-1799) and in the early works of his first stay in Berlin (1800-1802). Its main focus is directed to: (i) the articulation between subjectivity and intersubjectivity to understand the importance of the relation of reciprocal recognition between rational beings in the foundation of subjectivity; (ii) the concept of "common consciousness" that originates from this intersubjective relation and designates the fact that there is no isolated individual consciousness, but that all practical self-consciousness of the individual involves, as its necessary moment, the consciousness of another individual and his freedom; and finally, (iii) the way in which the systematic function of intersubjectivity affects the Fichtian conception of language: this presents itself in the doctrine of science at the same time as a condition for the realisation of intersubjectivity and as an expression of this "common consciousness", as a means in which a "single common understanding" is built among speakers. Such a reading hypothesis aims both to contribute to the understanding of Fichte's work and the path of his thought, as well as to elaborate the critical theoretical and practical consequences of this articulation between subjectivity and intersubjectivity for the current philosophical debates.
