Abstract

Thermal management is a vital feature for safety, reliability, and performance of several applications such as electronic assembly and packaging, solar energy and medical devices, automobile and aerospace structures, etc. Incorporating high contents of thermally conductive fillers has been the most efficient and economical strategy to improve the thermal conductivity (TC) of polymer matrices. However, such high filler contents inevitably lead to deteriorated mechanical properties, high density, and difficult processing. One promising way to achieve elevated properties without the need to use high amounts of filler is by combining different nanomaterials into the same composite. The reason for that is related to the synergistic dispersion of nanohybrids in polymer matrices, as well as the optimization of conductive networks. Even though various geometrically dissimilar nanohybrids have already been extensively researched, there is still little work done on 2D nanohybrids as fillers in polymer composites. Therefore, this project aims at investigating unconventional characteristics of these novel 2D nanohybrids based composites. These characteristics, despite not being generally studied, are fundamental for some specific applications that operate under harsh-conditions. On that account, it is aimed to investigate how the nanocomposites' thermal conductivity is affected by increased temperature, if the polymer electrical insulating behavior is maintained after the nanofillers addition, and how the nanocomposites mechanically behave when subjected to low temperatures.
