Abstract

Urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is a type of agricultural production carried out in small areas within cities (intra-urban space) or in its surroundings (peri-urban space) and it constitutes one of the alternatives to reduce hunger and food insecurity. It can be practiced in a variety of forms and production systems, from small-scale production intended only for own consumption to that carried out in urban lots with the application of vast sums of money. The benefits of UPA diverse, including extra income generation, new jobs and increased availability of fresh food with high nutritional value. Thus, studying this type of agriculture is important to support the development of public policies that encourage its development. The proposed research aims to study UPA in Centre Wellington - ON, Canada, which is a reference country in urban agriculture. Through the application of questionnaires to urban and peri-urban farmers, bibliographic review and research on official websites, we will seek to characterize UPA carried out in the city, investigate the existence of public policies that support its development, understand the importance of these public policies for the development of UPA in Centre Wellington, and determine how this type of agriculture contributes for local development and improving food security. The data collected in Canada during the exchange period will be compared against data collected in Brazil and it will help us better understand the particularities of UPA in both countries, in addition to subsidizing the formulation of new public policies that stimulate the development of UPA in Brazil.
