Abstract

Petiveira alliacea L. is a perennial shrub from the Phytolaccaceae family, it is a medicinal plant found in Latin America, which grows in tropical regions of the South and Center continent, the Caribbean, and Africa. This species is popularly known as "guinea", "mucuracaá" and "pipi", being used in folk medicine in antirheumatic treatment, as an analgesic, and for the treatment of respiratory problems. Pharmacological studies of this species have shown the therapeutic potential of P. alliaceae as an immunomodulator, analgesic, antimicrobial and anticancer. Our research group has recently been evaluating the antimicrobial properties of extract and fractions of P. alliaceae. This information, combined with the data described in the literature, and their use by the population corroborate the importance of the development and validation of an analytical method for the quality control of this medicinal plant. Thus, this project goals to carry out a phytochemical study aiming to isolate and identify the major components of the n-butanol fraction of the crude extract aerial parts, as well as to develop and validate an analytical method by High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD), at least one of the isolated compounds will be used as standard, to be used in the quality control of this species and also contribute to the training of human resources in Franca region.
