Abstract

The use of experimental methods is very important for the automobile industry, taking into consideration that it is possible to analyze aerodynamic phenomena essential for its development. Since the second half of the XIX century, studies related to several engineering fields have been made in hydrodynamic tunnels, considering that, using this instrument, it gets easier to visualize phenomena associated with the automobile’s aerodynamics. Using the hydrodynamic tunnel and Ahmed bodies, the study can be performed to achieve performance improvements, energy economy, and other factors related to the automobile industry. Accordingly, this work has the proposal to establish an experimental methodology for the visualization of the flow in hydrodynamic tunnels, around two in-line Ahmed bodies (simulating convoy trucks). In this way, it is desired to investigate turbulent wake flow and its influence and effects on the automotive aerodynamics, due to different shapes and relative positioning of the bodies, aiming the implication of the drag reduction, which will mean a desired fuel consumption reduction to the automobiles.
