Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world and causes pain, changes in physical function, and limitation of activities of daily living. The perception of the patient about his clinical condition through questionnaires is commonly used to evaluate the results of health intervention programs, as well as to trace the clinical diagnosis of the disease. The KOOS questionnaire (Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) has been widely used in patients with knee OA. It was originally developed in the Swedish and English languages and has 5 dimensions: pain, activities of daily living, sport, functional recreation, and quality of life related to the knee, containing a total of 46 questions. Recently, KOOS was adapted for the short version, KOOS-PS (Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score and Physical Function Short-form) that was included in the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) Standard-set for Hip & Knee Osteoarthritis, as a recognized measure of functional status. However, this instrument has not yet been translated and validated for Brazilian Portuguese. Objective: to translate, cross-culturally adapt and analyze the psychometric properties of the short version of the KOOS questionnaire (KOOS-PS) in order to obtain a valid version of the KOOS-PS for the Brazilian population. Methods: For the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the KOOS-PS, 100 individuals with knee pain, of both sexes, aged 18 years or over will be selected. The research will comprise 2 phases: the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the KOOS and the verification of psychometric properties of the questionnaire, namely structural validity, internal consistency, construct validity, and reliability. Data analysis will be performed using SPSS software (version 23.0. SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). It is hoped that this study will contribute to national research by assisting the screening of individuals with knee OA, expanding the dialogue between research conducted in Brazil, such as that conducted internationally. In addition, we hope to make available to the Brazilian population an instrument for the evaluation and monitoring of knee OA that contributes both to the diagnosis and to the investigation of early stages of OA, thus increasing the chances of success with the therapeutic interventions applied to these patients.(AU)
