The teaching of architecture in Lina Bo Bardi's trajectory

Abstract

This research seeks to analyze and investigate the role of the Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) as a teacher in Brazil, during the period of 1947, when the São Paulo Art Museum (Museu de Arte de São Paulo) was founded, until 1992, the year of her death. There is a gap in the historiography with regard to Lina's academic performance, which began in 1951, with the foundation of the Contemporary Art Institute (Instituto de Arte Contemporânea, IAC do MASP), where she had her first experience as a teacher, and continued in her passages by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, FAU-USP), for two years, and by the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Bahia (Universidade Federal da Bahia, UFBA), also in the Architecture course. Thus, we intend to build a panoramic view of her performance in the teaching of Architecture in Brazil, including her inclination for the educational function within museums and institutes that she founded and intended to found. Based on the meeting and analysis of her teaching activities, such as class notes, transcription of lectures and thesis, and the realization of interviews with alumni, while it is still possible, we will try to answer the question of how was Lina Bo Bardi as a teacher of Architecture and to analyze her contribution to the museums, institutes and colleges in which she taught.
