Abstract

This research seeks to contribute to the understanding of Latin American cities in the second half of the 20th century - when urbanization processes in the continent are accentuated -, in order to discuss their representations. With the illustrated magazine OCruzeiro (which circulated weekly between 1928 and 1975) as a documentary corpus, the research takes the interval between 1957 and 1965 as a privileged time frame, as it was the period when O Cruzeiro Internacional also circulated in Latin America. It is intended here to recognize the way cities were read, disseminated, and constructed through texts and images in special articles (photoreports), in editorials, and in specific sections that were dedicated to urban themes, notably the columns "Luzes da Cidade" and "Pelo Brasil e Pelo Mundo". From the systematic survey of the material, and recognizing the moment as a period of strengthening ties between the countries of the continent and building a regional identity, we also seek to discuss how Brazilian cities were (or were not) part of this Latin American landscape.
