Abstract

At the current stage of capitalist development, the advance of science and technology allows to capital new ways of production of space, aside from creating new means of work and accumulation. The technology increment in the management, represented by the ideal of smart cities has become increasingly important in the world. Mainly in the last two decades, hegemonic agents are selling the smart city idea as the solution for urban problems and as the city's future. This discourse is present in the management of multiple Brazilian metropolia, as is the case of Campinas, which tries to show itself as the city of knowledge and innovation. However, this management model can induce restructurings in urban space through investments and selective policies. Thus, this research, employing bibliographic review, geotechnologies, and fieldwork, aims to set a critical view over the technocrat utopia of smart cities. Also, the research intends to investigate theoretically and empirically the tecnification of the territory in Campinas, besides to contribute to the understanding, as much theoretically as practically, the implications of this process to the urban space and planning, expanding the geographical knowledge over a fundamental theme of the current Brazilian urban reality.
