Abstract

This proposal will investigate the evolutionary mechanisms that guided the origin and differentiation of the ZW sex chromosome system in vertebrates, with the support of a national and international network of collaborators, equally interested in the theme of this proposal. Isolation, characterization and mapping of the satellites of model groups of fishes, reptiles and birds will be carried out, in order to compare and analyze the mechanisms and the role of satellites DNAs in the origin and differentiation of sex chromosomes in vertebrates. Additionally, comparative genomic hybridization and chromosome painting experiments will be used to investigate of the stability of sex chromosomes in the Triportheidae fish family and in its sister group Gasteropelecidae. Comparative analysis of satellites will provide a unique opportunity to characterize large collections of satellites DNAs in non-model species and explore the differentiation mechanisms of sex chromosomes in different groups of vertebrates. Such comparative procedures will enable a better understanding of the evolutionary processes that shaped the patterns of distribution of repetitive sequences, as well as the mechanisms of evolution of the sex chromosomes. In addition, the development of this proposal will provide, reciprocally, the proponent and the members of Cytogenetics Laboratory of UFSCar, the opportunity for improvement in their area of expertise.
