This subproject I aims to analyses the main factors and conditions for innovative approaches in environmental sanitation governance in the São Paulo Macrometropolis. The analytical framework is based on the existing empirical conditions and the need to move towards integrated and participatory governance of public programs and policies in the face of climate variability, growing social demands and significant socio-territorial transformations, as main determinants of adaptive capacity and resilience of ecological and socio-political systems. The research addresses the main factors that result in political-administrative conflicts and their impacts on the implementation, sustainability and effectiveness of a new perspective for environmental sanitation governance and the possibility of promoting transparency and social participation in public policies in the face of emerging conflicts and their different forms of manifestation. Specifically, this research project of scientific initiation gives continuity to the research on experiences of depollution and renaturalisation of urban rivers with an emphasis on the case of the Pinheiros River in São Paulo. The project also foresees the mapping of international experiences with the possibility of a research stay in Germany, already envisaged in the previous grant, which however could not be carried out due to the pandemic crisis.
