Abstract

The genus Enterococcus ssp. is composed of numerous species of bacteria isolated from the soil, water, associated with plants, fermented foods, and dairy products, in addition to being found ubiquitously in the human gastrointestinal tract and domestic animals. Because they are considered opportunistic pathogens, many species of the genus attract attention for their risks to human health, especially Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis have been reported to be associated with hospital infections and present in the community. In the last 50 years, the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens and holders of genes encoding virulence factors capable of evading the human immune system has caused considerable concern and has been a source of research in human consumption products. Concomitantly, enterococci cause bovine mastitis, an infection of the mammary gland tissue of susceptible cows. The use of antibiotics in these animals has also caused the selection of bacteria resistant to the drugs, which cause pathologies in humans through the consumption of milk from infected animals. In this way, the project aims to evaluate the phenotypic resistance profile and the genotypic virulence profile of Enterococcus ssp. isolated from milk samples of cows with clinical and subclinical bovine mastitis.
