Abstract

In this project we plan to study Moiré Lenses in the context of transport and manipulation of cold atoms. Moiré lenses are variable focus lenses and in the context of this project are formed by two diffractive elements that generate a spatial phase profile equivalent to the phase profile imprinted on a light wave front by a conventional lens. The rotation of one diffractive element with respect to the other alters the phase profile and the effective focus of the lens. This type of application is especially interesting for manipulating cold atoms and quantum gases and within the present project it will be explored in the context of optical atom transport, as recently demonstrated by Unnikrishnan and collaborators [Arxiv: 2103.02387]. The focus of this project is on the development of the optical theory associated with Moiré lenses and its application to the transport of cold atoms.
