Abstract

This project lies within the area of machine design, aiming at more efficient rotating machines by improving the lubricated contacts in journal bearings. For that, one studies the behavior of hydrodynamic bearings with textured shafts, aiming at reducing the friction in the contact interface. Despite the amount of works in the literature, they mainly focus on bearing texturization (texture on the static casing surface of the bearing). Therefore, there is little knowledge about the behavior of texturized shafts (moving part of the bearing) supported by plain journal bearings. Hence, this project aims at the mathematical modeling and at the numerical simulation of a hydrodynamic bearing whose shaft has superficial textures. The objective is to understand the behavior of the lubricant in the bearing gap subjected to the textures on the shaft, and to comprehend the mechanism behind the effects that the textures cause on the loading capacity and on the driving torque of the bearing.
