Abstract

Binge Eating Disorder is a category of Eating Disorder officially recognized in the fifth version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). This eating disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating that occur at least once a week for the past three months and are associated with significant distress. The DSM-5 criteria for Binge Eating Disorder also require at least three of the following characteristics: eating much faster than normal; eat until you feel excessively full; overeating without feeling physically hungry; eating alone due to the shame of the amount of food eaten; and feeling disgust, depression or a lot of guilt after binge eating episodes. In addition to the diagnostic criteria mentioned above, people with binge eating disorder often also have obesity, and consequently have a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have investigated psychological and psychiatric problems associated with binge eating disorder, however little is known about the quality of life of individuals with binge eating disorder. This project will provide an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students through 1) review of the literature on quality of life of individuals with binge eating disorder; and 2) practical experience in activities related to the randomized clinical trial entitled "Development of an improved and accessible treatment program for people with binge eating disorder and overweight or comorbid obesity".
