One important area of the Energy Production Innovation Center (EPIC) is the investigationof liquid-liquid flows in centrifugal pumps. These pumps are frequently used in oil industry topump oil-gas and oil-water mixtures; however, their working performance with two-phase flowsis still not completely understood, the main reason for this lack of knowledge being that thoseflows are excessively complex, with one fluid flowing in a swirling flow of other fluid. In orderto understand the dependence of the pump performance on operating parameters, it is imperativeto know how different fluids (or phases) are arranged in the pump for different flow conditions.In their turn, the distribution of one fluid within the other depends on the structure of the latter,i.e., on the mean flow and fluctuations. In the case of turbulent flows, this means a dependenceon the mean flow and second order moments. This Post-Doctoral position concerns theexperimental investigation of turbulence and phase distribution in rotating flows. For that,experiments using optical techniques will be performed in centrifugal pumps.Optical techniques are non-intrusive methods to measure one and two-phase flows. Someof those techniques, such as Particle Image Velocimetry - PIV and Particle Tracking Velocimetry- PTV, are able to provide instantaneous 2D or 3D fields of the flow in one single test. This is ofgreat interest in many applications of fluid mechanics dealing with pattern identification. In thiswork, we intend to measure the flow within the liquid-liquid patters appearing in two-phase flowsinside centrifugal of transparent material.The main objective of this Post-Doctoral position is to measure and model two phase flowsinside BCS pumps. In order to do it, the Post-Doctoral candidate must have considerable savoirfaire in numerical codes applied to image processing (to obtain instantaneous velocity fields oftwo-phase flows), and it is expected that he/she interact with the students involved in the project.As a result, we intend to understand the performance variations of the pump under differentconditions, and to propose a correlation to account for the loss of performance based on operatingparameters.
