Epidemiological and clinical-evolutionary aspects of a cohort of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at HC-Unicamp: occurrence of adverse events and factors related to the prognosis

Abstract

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV2 that quickly spread to all continents after its identification in China in December 2019. In Brazil, 2,118,646 cases and 80,120 deaths were reported until July 20. Of these cases, 13,801 occurred in Campinas / SP, with 639 deaths. Among the cases that require hospitalization, some are submitted to invasive procedures such as insertion of a central venous catheter and orotracheal intubation which, in addition to patient factors, increase the risk of hospital infections (HI). IH and other adverse hospital events can negatively impact the prognosis. The objectives of this study are: to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical-evolutionary aspects of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at Unicamp's Hospital de Clínicas; evaluate the occurrence of adverse events, such as HI and drug-related events, and the impact of these factors on the evolution of cases. Method: a cohort study that will include all adult patients admitted with a diagnosis of SarsCov-2 infection, at HC-Unicamp Hospital until November 2020. Patients will be identified by the notification system of the Epidemiological Surveillance Center. The data will be collected using a standardized instrument and elaborated in REDCap, where they will be deposited. Descriptive and comparative analysis of the data will be performed and depending on the number of cases included, logistic regression analysis will be performed to identify the variables, independently associated with ICU admission, occurrence of hospital infections and mortality. The data will be analyzed using the SPSS statistics package, version 17.0, for Windows. This study is expected to contribute to the knowledge of the natural history of the disease in our environment, giving visibility to the results through presentation at congresses and publication of a scientific article; contribute to the development of the scientific approach and the ability to perform clinical research of the student involved.
