This project seeks to investigate the conflict around a natural resource (in the case of Pirarucu, Arapaima gigas) involving communities of local fishermen, from their different modes of action regarding the fishing of this species of fish. The objective of the project is to analyze this conflict under the hypothesis that it is expressed in the categorization of participants as "invaders" and "handlers" supported by a concept of distinct sustainability (among local residents) on the conservation of natural resources and Pirarucu in particular. The project thus seeks to show how a social conflict is related to disputes over concepts of nature, by different actors. To reach the proposed objectives, a qualitative survey will be made through primary data (interviews, discussions in meetings, and coexistence) and secondary data (minutes, reports and other documents). In addition, the research will be based on extensive research experience with local communities, as well as the personal and family history of the researcher. We hope with the results of the project, to expand the understanding of territorial disputes by the use of natural resources, as well as the role of the units of "sustainable use" and the institutional rules associated with them. This research may contribute, with a local vision combined with the scientific vision, to current debates on the future of the Amazon. (AU)
