Abstract

In this project, we propose the development of a two-dimensional trap for producing degenerate quantum gases in two dimensions. Two-dimensional (2D) gases are produced from tridimensional (3D) gases strongly confined in one spatial direction. Therefore, the trap is composed by two parts: an accordion optical lattice with tunable confinement responsible for achieving the two dimensional regime and a 2D trapping potential made with a laser beam with intensity modelled by a digital micromirror device (DMD). The student will be responsible for the full development of the accordion lattice (design, construction and characterization) and for the design and simulation of the 2D potential. By the end of this project, the developed experimental setup will be installed in a running experiment of quantum gases making it possible to obtain the first two-dimensional quantum gases in the group.
