Abstract

The present work aims to analyze comparatively three Hispanic-American plays from the early 19th century: Camila, la patriota de Sudamérica by Camilo Henríquez (1817), Tupac Amaru by Luís Ambrósio Morante (1821), and La Pola by José Domínguez Roche (1826). The project pursue to investigate both aesthetic and ideological connections that the pieces establish when compared to programmatics and dramatics texts of French illustration that have been circulating in Hispanic America since the late decades of the 18th century. Therefore, the formal analysis will be constructed considering the horizon of the specific material conditions of theatrical representation in the region. At last, the presence of the expedients of Spanish theater from previous centuries will be questioned. This legacy had been utterly rejected in terms of content, but it seems to leave striking traces in form of theatre plays. (AU)
